The Macomb Online Safety Team's Second Annual Macomb Internet Safety Day was a huge success!

The Lincoln Elementary School assembly kicked things off in the afternoon. All second and third grade students spent eight weeks learning about various online safety issues. At the end of the eight weeks, the children participated in an online poster contest.

Internet Safety Coordinator, Jace Galloway, showed a Netsmartz presentation during the assembly. Lincoln School also received a very special surprise from Clicky, Netsmartz famous animated character. Clicky somehow "heard" that the children at Lincoln spent eight weeks learning about online safety and participated in the poster contest! He also introduced Principal Mr. Fulkerson and Coordinator and Ms. Galloway.

Winners of the poster contest were finally announced and prizes distributed.

Later in the evening, the parental event took place at the Macomb High School Gym. Mr. Fulkerson welcomed the crowd and Miss Macomb 2007, emceed the event.

Macomb Mayor Mick Wisslead officially proclaimed the day, Macomb Internet Safety Day.

Several presentations were shown. Special guests Sarah Migas, from the Illinois Attorney General Office spoke, and keynote Tina Meier shared her compelling and powerful story with the near 200 people in attendance.

The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), with support from numerous companies including CyberSmart, Enough is Enough, CA, McAfee, Microsoft, and Symantec, requested United States leaders work with their states' education leaders to ensure Internet safety, security and ethics lessons are integrated in every classroom in the US.

The "No Child Left Behind Act" requires students to be technology literate upon completion of the 8th grade. To date, there is still no formal education on how to stay safe, secure and ethical on the Internet.

Ron Teixeria, executive director of NCSA said "It is critical states and schools implement Internet safety, security and ethics lessons into current technology literacy education efforts in order to protect children from identity theft but also the nation's online infrastructure."
